The deal will increase Axon's ownership in the US drone manufacturer to approximately 37%, combining investment capital with an exclusive public safety distribution agreement.
Axon has announced a $1.2 billion investment in Skydio, significantly expanding its ownership in the autonomous drone manufacturer as both companies deepen their partnership in public safety technology.
Announced November 5, the transaction values Skydio at $5.2 billion before the investment.
The agreement combines cash and Axon stock and includes both newly issued shares and the purchase of existing shares from shareholders. It is not a conventional $1.2 billion primary funding round.
Axon's fully diluted ownership is expected to increase from approximately 15% to 37%, with the remaining transactions scheduled to close across late 2026 and early 2027.
Turning Drones Into First Responders
Skydio was founded in 2014 by Adam Bry, Abe Bachrach and Matt Donahoe.
The company develops autonomous drones using computer vision and AI to navigate complex environments with limited manual intervention.
After initially targeting consumers, Skydio shifted toward enterprise, defense and public safety customers.
Its partnership with Axon is focused on Drone as First Responder, or DFR, programs.
Rather than waiting for officers or firefighters to arrive before launching a drone, public safety agencies can deploy aircraft from strategically placed docking stations immediately after receiving an emergency call.
The drone can arrive ahead of ground responders and provide real-time information about the situation.
Skydio says more than 1,500 public safety customers use its technology, while over 28 million Americans live within two miles of a Skydio DFR docking station.
According to the companies, participating agencies have reported reductions of up to 65% in priority response times.
These figures represent reported deployments and outcomes, not guarantees across every agency.
A Potential $1 Billion in Annual Bookings
Axon says Skydio expects approximately $1 billion in bookings during its current fiscal year.
Bookings represent customer commitments rather than revenue already recognized.
The new partnership also makes Axon the exclusive distributor of Skydio's public safety products in the United States and Canada.
Axon estimates the North American Drone as First Responder opportunity at approximately $13 billion.
The partnership gives Skydio access to Axon's established relationships with law enforcement agencies and its existing ecosystem of body cameras, digital evidence platforms, dispatch systems and other public safety tools.
The Bigger Opportunity and Risks
Skydio competes in a sector where regulatory approvals, supply chains and government procurement can determine commercial success.
Its US manufacturing base is an advantage in government contracts requiring trusted domestic drone technology.
However, operating autonomous aircraft over populated areas requires stringent safety standards, oversight and community trust.
The transaction strengthens Skydio's financial and commercial position, but its ultimate value will depend on turning autonomous drone deployments into a dependable service for emergency responders.
For Axon, the investment represents a major expansion beyond body cameras and Tasers into flying robots that may become part of everyday public safety operations.
