Warehouse robotics startup Ultra has announced $62 million in financing as it expands a business that offers automated equipment through a service model, according to Fortune. The financing comes as warehouse operators continue to look for ways to handle repetitive work without committing to large, one-off automation purchases.

Robotics-as-a-service changes the way customers pay. Rather than owning a machine outright, a warehouse may purchase the use of robotic capacity alongside maintenance and support. In theory, the arrangement lowers initial capital requirements and allows an operator to expand deployment as volumes change.

That simplicity for customers creates a demanding financial model for the supplier. The robotics company must buy or manufacture equipment, deploy it, maintain it and recover those costs over the life of the contract. Utilization, downtime, installation time and customer churn all become central to unit economics.

Ultra’s financing will be judged against those operating metrics, not only the number of robots shipped. Industrial customers want a measurable improvement in throughput or labor productivity. Delivering it consistently across sites with different layouts and software systems is where many robotics companies encounter the largest barriers to scale.
