OpenAI announced $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation on March 31, 2026, in one of the largest private financing rounds in technology history.
The round was anchored by strategic partners including Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank, with continued participation from Microsoft. SoftBank co-led the financing alongside investors including Andreessen Horowitz, D. E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates.
The financing comes as OpenAI expands beyond consumer chatbots into enterprise software, coding agents and infrastructure for increasingly capable AI models. The company operates ChatGPT, its developer API platform and Codex, while investing in computing systems required to train and serve frontier models.
At the time of the announcement, OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users and more than 50 million subscribers. It also said revenue had reached approximately $2 billion per month, with enterprise customers accounting for more than 40% of revenue. These figures were disclosed by the company and should not be interpreted as independently audited financial results.
A substantial portion of OpenAI's strategy depends on securing computing capacity across cloud providers, chip manufacturers and data centers. The company is expanding its infrastructure partnerships to support growing demand for model training and inference.
The commercial challenge is whether revenue can scale fast enough to justify the capital required to build and operate this infrastructure. As AI models become more capable, the cost of delivering their services remains a central factor in determining the economics of the industry.
