ICON has raised $200 million in Series D funding to expand the manufacturing and deployment of robotic construction systems designed to automate parts of the building process.
Baillie Gifford and funds managed by BlackRock co-led the investment, with participation from Capital Factory, CAZ Investments, Moderne Ventures, Moonshots Capital, Norwest, Overmatch, Tiger Global and other investors.
Founded by Jason Ballard and his co-founders, the Austin-based company develops large-scale 3D-printing robots that construct building walls using specialized concrete-like materials. Its technology combines robotics, software, building design and advanced materials to reduce the labor and time required for construction.
ICON says it has completed more than 270 buildings and structures, including homes in the Wolf Ranch development in Georgetown, Texas, and projects involving affordable housing and military infrastructure.
The new funding will support commercial production of Titan, ICON's multi-story robotic construction system, alongside a new research and development facility in Austin. The company claims its technology can reduce the construction time of an average home by six weeks and lower costs by approximately 40% relative to a national benchmark. It also says it is on pace for fourfold revenue growth in 2026.
Those performance figures are company estimates and reported results. The broader commercial question is whether automated construction can deliver consistent savings once permitting, foundations, roofing, utilities and the other elements of a complete building are included.
